When MD alumni serve HMS together, they create a powerful collective impact that reaches students, patients, and communities. Here, you’ll see how gifts of all sizes, along with the time and expertise alumni share, make that impact possible.

"Philanthropic giving to HMS is a wonderful way to help drive progress. Giving signals a commitment to ensuring that the School is at the forefront of shaping medicine, science, and health care for decades to come."

Dean George Q. Daley,
AB
82, MD 91, PhD

Gifts of up to $2,000

 total nearly $750,000

—enough to support 11 students for one year or to advance research, innovation in medical education, and other priority areas across HMS.

The 2026 Reunion cycle raised  $15.8 million from 539 donors—the third-highest Reunion fundraising year in HMS history.

Nearly 600 MD donors gave at the Dean’s Council leadership level in FY26, reflecting their confidence in HMS and the dean.

The Class of 1962’s endowed scholarship fund is both a memorial to beloved classmates and a lasting testament to the class’s friendships and accomplishments—a legacy that will support students in perpetuity. When the Class Agent role passed from Robert C. “Bob” Moellering Jr., MD ’62, to Roger E. Meyer, MD ’62 (both now deceased), Meyer proposed that the class honor Moellering’s professional contributions to medicine and his personal impact on generations of HMS students. By their 55th Reunion in 2017, class members had raised enough to establish an endowed scholarship recognizing Moellering and other deceased classmates while helping students struggling to finance their medical education.

When HMS later made a standard increase to the minimum gift amount for an endowed scholarship to $500,000, the class redoubled its fundraising efforts, even though its fund had been approved at the lower amount. Through Meyer’s letters and personal outreach, classmates rallied to reach the new target in 2026—transforming shared loss and deep bonds into a lasting tribute that keeps students firmly at the center.

Honoring Classmates, Supporting Students

Roger Meyer, MD '62

“You can be assured that the faculty, staff, and students of Harvard Medical School and Harvard University will not step back from our commitment to health equity both here in the United States and around the world. This is a commitment that isn’t just scientific. It isn’t just humanitarian. It is fundamentally a moral commitment, a solidarity with humanity.” —Vikram Patel, MBBS, PhD, Paul Farmer Professor and Chair of Global Health and Social Medicine at HMS.

In June 2026, HMS community members gathered for a panel on investing in global health, featuring five prominent Harvard alumni faculty members. Read more about the field of global health and what these experts had to say.

From Financial Aid to Giving Back

“Without the financial aid I received from HMS, a medical education—and my career in psychiatry—would have been out of reach, as someone who grew up in a small Texas town and had schoolteacher parents. Being the second Black woman admitted to the School was a profound honor and instilled in me a lasting sense of obligation to give back. I support financial aid so that future students can access the opportunities I had. I hope my contributions inspire others who have benefited from an HMS education to give back as well.”
—Shirley F. Marks,  MD ’71, MPH ’76

Alumni Volunteers

Donor Priorities, Real-World Impact

“I don’t think I would have attended HMS without the incredible financial aid package I received,” says Ethan Bott, a current MD student.
Bott envisions a future in academic medicine—integrating clinical care, teaching, and advocacy—while working to expand opportunities and improve access for underserved communities.
92% of MD alumni giving supports flexible funds for the dean, financial aid for students, and critical research initiatives.

$19 million in MD scholarships are awarded each year, easing the debt burden for graduates.

71% of students receive financial aid, expanding access to an HMS education.

Fueling Student Opportunity

In 2026, 156 MD students graduated. Nearly half will train at HMS-affiliated hospitals, with 40 matched to internal medicine—the most popular specialty this year.

Annually, over 1,400 MD alumni are members of the Federman Loyalty Circle. Whether they’ve been giving for five years or nearly 50 years, Federman members demonstrate their enduring confidence in HMS and its leadership. This past fiscal year, 80 new members were welcomed into this giving society.

The Federman Loyalty Circle honors MD alumni who have made consecutive annual gifts of any size for five years or more.

LEADERSHIP

How the Alumni Community Makes an Impact

On average, 22% of HMS alumni give annually to the School—more than three times the 7% alumni participation rate at peer institutions.
In FY26, 1,964 alumni gave to HMS, contributing more than $19 million to the School.
For generations, legacy donors have supported HMS’s future through planned gifts and tax-wise contributions—extending these donors’ impact beyond their lifetimes. Legacy commitments have a lasting effect on the School’s mission to improve health and well-being for all.

The Ezekiel Hersey Council recognizes legacy donors with lifetime membership for creating a life-income gift or including HMS in their estate plans.
